Welcome to Sandown

High numbers best in sprints, especially in large fields on soft going.

Flat and National Hunt. A right-handed oval track of a mile and five furlongs in circumference, with an uphill run from the home turn of three and a half furlongs, and chutes for mile and a quarter and mile and three-quarters contests. There is a separate straight course of five furlongs running diagonally across the centre. The National Hunt circuit runs mainly on the inside of the flat one, but crosses to the outside of it on the home turn at the famous Pond Fence, three from home. There is an uphill run-in of 220 yards from the final obstacle. On the chase track there are three fences close together at the end of the back straight that are known as the 'Railway fences'.

Among the top races at Sandown are the Whitbread Gold Cup (April), the Classic Trial (April) and the Group One Eclipse Stakes (July). However the course stages plenty of top-class action throughout the year under both codes and can lay claim to being the premier London area track. Sandown Park is a member of the United Racecourses organisation, along with Epsom and Kempton Park.

From London, take the A3 and follow the brown venue signs to Sandown Park. Alternatively, from the M25 exit at Junction 10 and follow the A3 towards London; exit onto the A307 and follow the brown venue signs. The Portsmouth Road car park is off the A307 Esher High Street directly in front of the main entrance.

Trains to Esher station for Sandown Park run from London Waterloo and Clapham Junction approximately every 20 minutes and the journey time is 25 minutes. Esher station is approximately 10 minutes flat walk from the main entrance. There is a taxi rank and a free Sandown Park minibus to and from the train station, running every 15 minutes until 90 minutes after the last race.
